Aspergillosis

Aspergillosis is an infection or allergy caused by the fungus Aspergillus. It can cause

  • serious acute infections (Invasive aspergillosis) in people being treated for cancer
  • chronic infections that damage lungs irreparably
  • chronic allergies that permanently debilitate

The groups of people at risk from acute aspergillosis are those who have had their immune system totally removed eg to treat some types of leukemia.

Those at risk from chronic aspergillosis are much more difficult to identify. They often have no clear vulnerability or problem with their immune system

You can read all about Aspergillus and aspergillosis on the Aspergillus Website at www.aspergillus.org.uk
